Piano Duets & Ensembles
What People are Saying
Such a cool duet... A perfect introduction to 4 hand piano music and the challenge of duet playing! This student has only done solo/accompaniment playing but now it's time to share the melody!

How to Choose a Piano Duet
Piano duets are one of the most valuable additions to any music library. Use them as supplemental repertoire with your teacher, performance pieces for two students, sight-reading practice, or just something fun to play with a family member. Besides being a lot of fun, duets build real musicianship skills like listening, collaboration, and musical awareness.
What makes Ocean Tails Music duets different:
Both Primo and Secondo parts include melodic material - fun for both parts!
Parts are written at equal difficulty so students at the same level can play together
A good rule of thumb: choose a duet one to two levels below your current playing level. Browse the listings below to find the right fit for you. Still not sure? Reach out through the Contact page and I'll help you choose.

What level do I need to be to play piano duets?
Duets are available for all levels, from elementary to intermediate. Keep in mind that ensemble pieces are typically played one to two levels below your current solo playing level - a Level 5 student, for example, will feel most comfortable with a duet marked Level 3-4. The added challenge of ensemble playing often makes up the difference.
Can piano duets be used in lessons?
Absolutely. Duets are one of the best tools a teacher can use. They shift the lesson dynamic so both teacher and student are playing and listening together, which builds confidence, ear training, and collaborative skills in a different way from solo pieces.
Are piano duets good for recitals?
Yes - duets are consistently crowd pleasers. They're also a great option for students who feel nervous performing alone, since the shared experience reduces pressure and tends to get a very warm audience response. They also help students from the same studio get to know each other and build a sense of community.
Do both players need to be at the same level?
Ideally yes, though it depends on the piece. The duets in the Ocean Tails Music collection are written so both parts are roughly equal in difficulty, making them well suited for two students at the same level. These duets also work between teacher-student or a family member-student.
What is the difference between a piano duet and a piano duo?
A piano duet is music played by two pianists on one piano (1 piano 4 hands), with one person playing the Primo part and the other playing the Secondo part. A piano duo refers to two pianists performing together on two separate pianos (2 pianos 4 hands). Both involve ensemble playing, but the setup is different. Additionally, a piano double duo (or quartet) is 2 piano 8 hands.
